Meet Karrar Ali, aspiring civil engineer from Iraq

From Iraq to Sweden and studies at Luleå University of Technology

Karrar Ali came to Sweden from his homeland Iraq in the summer of 2010. In the modest community of Råneå in Norrbotten, home to about 2000 residents, Karrar swiftly assimilated into Swedish society. Today, he is pursuing a Civil Engineering degree, having interned at AFRY. He currently balances his studies with part-time work at AFRY.

Karrars initial sensation upon arriving in Sweden was the feeling of security that he found in the village, in the new school and in the beautiful surroundings. This was where he learned the language and spent a lot of time outdoors.

"Going to school in Sweden and experiencing such a warm welcoming feeling was a true joy for me. Compared to my experience in Iraq, everything was so different here, but the transition was surprisingly smooth. Despite the various trials and difficulties along the way, my gratitude for everything I have experienced is steady and unwavering. My childhood in Råneå and Norrbotten is something I carry with me with great joy. I had the chance to engage in a variety of sports and enjoy many outdoor activities. Fishing and hiking in the Swedish mountains are an experience that is hard to describe - it's amazing."

Karrar has always appreciated the opportunity to study and feels that engineering is the right choice for the future.

Karrar left Råneå for Luleå, currently studying his fourth year of Civil Engineering with a focus on Road and water, specializing in Soil and Rock construction at Luleå Technical University. Following his internship at AFRY in 2023, he transitioned to an hourly role, providing the flexibility for part-time employment while pursuing his studies.

What sparked your interest in AFRY?

"One of the things that sparked my interest in AFRY was the insightful guest lectures we attended at the university to prepare for the internship. I liked AFRY's marketing and the content they posted on their socials - it felt so welcoming. It got me very excited about the idea of working at AFRY someday.

Why did you choose a career in technology?

"I have always been fascinated by technology. My well-educated family of doctors and psychologists has consistently supported my pursuit of further education. Engaging in a science program was the turning point that sparked my passion for the tech industry."

"I chose technology because I want to be a person who can say; I built this. That is the kind of father I want to be."

During his internship at AFRY, Karrar was involved in a wide range of tasks, primarily focusing on administrative responsibilities. His duties also encompassed developing geotechnical drilling programs and applying for drilling permits.

"After the drilling was completed, the samples were analysed, and I was responsible for evaluating the probing that was performed on the jobsite. Additionally, I drafted a detailed report about the project and a more comprehensive report summarizing all actions taken and the recommendations to be implemented before the construction begins."

Describe your experience with AFRY after your internship?

"It turned out just as I had hoped. I enjoyed my time at AFRY immensely, it almost felt like my second home. I worked alongside fantastic colleagues and had a wonderful manager who was attentive. I found it very inspiring that whenever I asked for something, I was given more trust. It was also inspiring that when I was asking for something, it gave me more confidence. How the practice not only led me to get the support I needed, but also increased my confidence in my skills and abilities. Being able to see how my questions were treated with respect and trust gave me a sense of appreciation and confidence in my own potential. It was a reminder that cooperation and mutual helpfulness are fundamental building blocks in any work environment.

My experience is also that it is an inclusive workplace that allows room for a variety of opinions. It is crucial to have a culture with zero tolerance for discrimination. It attracts fascinating and knowledgeable people from different backgrounds."

"Norrbotten is home to the promising jobs of the future. This is where I want to raise my children and watch them grow up."

What are your goals?

"My primary life goal is to complete my studies. After my internship at AFRY, I feel motivated to complete my studies and advance in my career. I look forward to the day when I can give back to my parents all the love and support they have given me over the years. Their sacrifices and care have shaped me into the person I am today, and I can't wait to repay their generosity and support in a meaningful way. Being able to see them smile against the backdrop of my success is my greatest goal and my greatest emotional drive."

My feeling is that I will stay in northern Sweden, this is where the big investments are happening and with that comes interesting job opportunities.
