Master Thesis Project at ÅF, Automotive R&D - Future Brake Systems for Electric Vehicles

Background
Due to European emission regulations the share of Electric vehicles is increasing inside Europe as well as globally. In many big cities in some countries the trend is, due to air quality reasons, that use of combustion engines will be limited. Particle emission from disk brakes is an additional problem that has been noticed especially in European countries. A third issue is that the friction brakes are more seldom used and therefore become stiff and rusty. All these facts generate the need for developing new types of clean, robust and silent brakes for electric vehicles. An additional requirement is that they need to have good controllability to easily operate in harmony with the electric propulsion system.

Objective
The objective is to study principles and techniques for future brake systems for electric vehicles. In addition, also make a design proposal of such a system.

Methods
Through literature studies and interviews with subject matter experts, determine status and trends for brake systems used for hybrid and electric vehicles. Define a set of requirements future brake systems must fulfil. Propose some alternative techniques and principles for future brake systems. Make a design of such a system and support the design with a proof of concept, including calculations of performance, failure modes and robustness. Demonstrate the system performance with some driving cases like stopping distance, ABS braking, ESC functionality and energy recovery.

Deliverables
A report including:

  • Technical trends in brake system technology, with focus on EV/HEV
  • Review principles for vehicle braking and propose a brake system concept for EV/HEV
  • Demonstration of the proposed brake system in some driving cases
