Test lighting the new Kiruna

Did you know that the entire city of Kiruna is being relocated? ÅF Lighting is helping design the "new" Kiruna and after two years of preparations, we have completed our first test lighting.

The goal is to create lighting that is functional in every possible way. We are creating a city that supports people’s social lives and complements the city’s architecture, while enhancing Kiruna’s strong visual identity, says ÅF Lighting’s Head of Design Kai Piippo.

ÅF plays an important role in designing the new city of Kiruna, in collaboration with White. A large iron-ore mine is slowly undermining the city, so it is being relocated to a site three kilometres to the east. Kai and his fellow lighting designers are in charge of lighting the new city’s public areas: the town square, the parks and the roads.

-          We officially joined the project about two years ago and have now finalized a masterplan for the entire city. At this stage, we’re trying out what this might look like in real life.

The first test lighting involved the historic clock tower on top of Kiruna’s city hall. The building will not be moved to the new location, but the clock tower will be. There, it will act as the centre piece of the new town square.
