Chuzachen Hydro Power Plant

Development of general layout and detail design of a 110 MW HPP in India

Description of project:

Chuzachen hydroelectric power plant (110 MW) is located in the east district of Sikkim on the Rangpo and Rongli rivers. It is a run-of-river plant with storage capacity to supply peak load during the low flow season. The high head scheme consist of two interconnected reservoirs, a headrace tunnel system, an 800 m long surface penstock, and a powerhouse, housing two Francis turbines (2 x 55 MW).

ÅF's services:

Our services ranged from development of the general layout and  optimal harnessing of the water from the Rangpo and Rongli Rivers, before their confluence, to detail design.

We carried out the technical and economic assessment of the project (Pre-Feasibility Study) leading to the implementation of the agreement and performance of the following:

  • Review of the existing design
  • Assessment of hydrological basis and risks
  • Assessment of geological basis and risks
  • Preliminary project optimization
  • Preliminary design of the hydro-mechanical and electro-mechanical works
  • Preliminary review of the potential environmental impacts
  • Construction cost estimates
  • Preparation of a bankable Detailed Project Report (Feasibility Study Report)
  • Preparation of detail design and engineering for all project components including civil, hydro-mechanical (HM) and electro-Mechanical (EM) works for the construction.

We were also responsible for the assessment and analysis of the seismic loads; definition of seismic design criteria and consideration of the seismic load cases DBE (Design Basis Earthquake) and MDE (safety earthquake, Maximum Design Earthquake) for the detail design of civil, HM and EM works; in addition to providing technical support for the investor during the first two years of construction.
