Efterklang™ welcomes world leading acoustician

We are happy to announce the signing of yet another world star acoustician to Efterklang™ and would like to give a warm welcome to Adam Foxwell. Adam has until recently been leading Arup’s acoustic, audiovisual and theatre consulting team in Europe spanning 5 country offices. He has also been the research leader for their acoustic AV and theatre consulting skills network in Europe.

With a broad global experience as a building acoustics designer, Adams has provided acoustic expertise for landmark projects such as the New Nou Camp Stadium in Barcelona, the Burj Khalifa Tower in Dubai (tallest building in the world), 432 Park Avenue in New York (tallest residential building in the world), the National Music Forum Concert Halls in Wroclaw, the JFK Airport Terminal 4 in New York, to name a few.

We asked Adam to share his thoughts on acoustics and his ambitions for Efterklang™:

Why did you choose to join Efterklang™?

I’ve worked in the past with a few lovely people at Efterklang™ and we’ve done some impressive projects in the Middle East together – so there is a history that I am excited to build on. When I met the whole the team recently, I knew this was an intelligent bunch that is going places and wanted to be part of it!

Can you describe your role at Efterklang™?

I’ll be helping Efterklang™ attract clients who care about sound in the built environment. With this goal in mind, I’ll be working to find opportunities and projects throughout Europe to match our talented designers with tough challenges and help clients solve real problems.

In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges in the area of acoustics?

Perhaps it’s my recent fascination with nature, but I think it’s increasingly difficult for people to live in soundscapes that are natural and healthy for us. We are constantly bombarded with sounds from machines, media and products that care too little about their phycological or anthropological impact on us. It’s quite a challenge, although a meaningful one, to bring this sensitivity into the design process.

At Efterklang™ I’d like to venture into new territory, both geographically and technically. While most of my experience is in sound, I try to think broadly about wave physics rather than focusing on a narrow field of specialization. I think there are lots of ways to design buildings and cities better if we understand human perception to light, sound, vibration and even the waves we don’t see and hear. We’re living in an age of great digital power that allows us to solve problems in very new ways.
