Master Thesis Project at ÅF, Automotive R&D - Steer-by-wire electric/hydraulic steering for heavy duty trucks
In Europe there is a trend of raising the gross combination weight allowed for heavy duty vehicles. With the new legislation in Sweden and Finland there will be an increased demand for four axle trucks with double front axles. Volvo is working on a steer–by-wire solution for the steering of the second front axle, which will ease the implementation for other features as well as improving the driving comfort and maneuverability of the truck.
The task is to make a specification of design criteria’s for the system and specify functionality as well as looking at the hydraulic and electric installation, such as valve control and hose and cable routing. Optimize the installation with the criteria’s in mind.
Combining literature studies and interviews with subject matter experts to determined suitable actions and functionality. Analyse existing solutions (both mechanical and steer by wire) to come up with improvements and ways to optimize the concept.
A report including:
- List design and function criteria
- Concept evaluation
- Technical description of the decisions made during the design process.
- Specification for parts / part selection analysis
- Durability analysis for new parts
- Final result presentation
Concept system design, including:
- Redundancy analysis
- Schematic of electric and hydraulic routing
