Background
When developing suspension subsystems for a vehicle platform it is necessary to be able to prepare the design for proper vehicle directional control and handling. A slight understeering behavior at different driving conditions is targeted. There are several factors impacting this behavior and all of them need to be considered when developing a new vehicle chassis. It is also important to accomplish a certain tuning range of some of them to capture the full platform envelop. Some methods to handle steady state behavior have been developed over the years but there is a lack of simple design-tools to capture severe driving conditions and dynamic effects .

Objective
Study impact of mass, mass distribution, suspension elasto-kinematics, roll-stiffness and roll-damping distribution on vehicle understeer characteristics. This work is focused on dynamic maneuvers but shall consider steady state conditions as well.

Methods
Through literature studies and interviews with subject matter experts, identify the state of art methods for determination of vehicle directional control and the involved parameters. Develop principles and methods to calculate the complete set of factors and parameters impacting the directional control and understeer behaviour of a vehicle. Develop a simulation model to find the values of the most important factors. Finally, demonstrate the findings and the model by vehicle dynamics simulation of a vehicle performing different manoeuvres.

Deliverables

  • Understanding the phenomenon of understeering and its dependence on different vehicle parameters 
  • Guidelines/tool for balancing and tuning of understeering at steady state maneuvers
  • Simulation model for dynamic maneuvers guiding the design of wheel suspensions and components 
  • Demonstration of the model via simulation of different maneuvers
