Improve ride and NVH performance of vehicle chassis for autonomous vehicles

Background
Autonomous cars will bring new challenges for the OEMs when these vehicles are going to be designed and tuned for the Ride Comfort and NVH performance. The Future vehicles with “Robotic driver” that not have the human “planning in advance” capability will have new challenges for how the passenger will judge the Ride-, Lateral- & Longitudinal-comfort and NVH-Performance. This areas needs new methods and tools to be used for re-optimization which meet the demands from the autonomous passengers.

Objective
Identification of the major reasons for chassis and engine suspension related vehicle dis-comfort. Development of solutions to improve suspension design and balancing of characteristics for enhanced customer perception.

Methods
Through literature studies and interviews with subject matter experts, determine status and trends in design and tuning of autonomous cars for the Ride Comfort and NVH performance. Analyse strengths and weaknesses regarding the Ride Comfort and NVH performance in conventionalcompared with autonomous – vehicle, with technologies like Air Suspension, Active suspension, Road Preview, Proactive ride system. Develop principles, methods and solutions to improve the tuning and design for the autonomous Ride Comfort and NVH performance. The methods needs to cover for the limitations that the “Robotic driver” can provide vs. have the human driver with “planning in advance”. Finally, demonstrate the findings theoretically with simulation tools for the improvement for vehicles performance in different manoeuvres. Driving scenarios of interest are Ride-comfort on different road surfaces and for the Lateral- & Longitudinal-comfort use cornering and braking/acceleration.

Deliverables
A report including:

  • technical trends for Autonomous vehicle in Ride Comfort and NVH performance.
  • principles for improving design and tuning of autonomous cars, i.e. Ride-Comfort and NVHPerformance.
  • demonstration of an improved method covering the design and tuning of the vehicle chassis for autonomous vehicles.
