Degerforsen Dam
Dam safety measures and increased discharge capacity due to new design flood calculations in Sweden

Description of project:
Degerforsen Power Plant was built in the early 50’s. Due to aging of structures, new safety guidelines and new design flood calculations, and a number of dam safety measures were needed to maintain dam safety. ÅF's initial assignment was a feasibility study to identify the actions needed to meet standards and to increase the discharge capacity from approx 1330 m³/s to 2100 m³/s. After the feasibility study, ÅF was assigned the tender design and detailed construction design of these measures which included reinforcement of rockfill dams; instrumentation and supervision; new guidewalls both upstream and downstream; new spillway, including design of floodgate and control system; and a new improved electrical system for existing floodgates.
ÅF's services:
ÅF provided Eon Vattenkraft Sverige AB the following services: Owner's Engineer; feasibility study and review of dam safety inspections; tender and contract documents; detailed design; construction supervision; and environmental impact assessment permit applications and authorizations.
