ÅF takes Gothenburg down-under
ÅF to play major role in the West Link, one of Sweden's largest infrastructure projects.
The West Link will facilitate travel for all of western Sweden. The new infrastructure project in Gothenburg is an 8 km long railway, of which 6 km is laid in a tunnel under central Gothenburg, for the provision of cross-city commuter rail services. Thanks to three new stations, transit users will be able to travel more conveniently, faster and with fewer transfers. The double track railway and several new stations will make it possible to increase train frequency, shorten travel times and reach more destinations without changes.
ÅF is the technical consultant in charge of the West Link and the assignment includes detailed engineering and preparation of tender documents for the entire project. The assignment presents several geotechnical challenges. Gothenburg is built on layers of clay and sand, which makes the tunnel construction problematic.
To assist in the assignment, ÅF has engaged the Swiss engineering and consultancy company Basler Hofmann, which has developed a technology for advanced tunnel boring. ÅF has previously designed railway plans and system documents for the Korsvägen railway station sub-project in the West Link project.
