Stockholm’s Central Station in new lighting
ÅF Lighting has been entrusted with the prestigious task of lighting Stockholm Central Station, the largest and busiest railway station in Sweden. ÅF’s lighting team will design the interior lighting in the historical Great Hall, as well as the exterior lighting on the façade of the building.
One year from now, the Central Station in Stockholm will have a brand new appearance. The historical building that is being trafficked by more than 250 000 people daily, has become the subject of a complete renovation when it comes to both the interior as well as the exterior lighting.
- The space at the moment is far too dark so our main goal is to make it brighter, safer, and to create the appearance of it being a lot larger, says Kai Piippo, ÅF Lighting’s head of design.
Along with the City Hall, the Central Station is considered being one of the oldest buildings in the area. The challenge is to modernise the space while keeping the historic and cultural heritage at the center stage.
- We will illuminate the details in the ceiling and make sure to incorporate more daylight into the new and improved Great Hall. There are so many beautiful details in the architecture that should really be highlighted, says Kai.
This is not the first project of its kind that ÅF’s lighting team has been a part of. In 2015, ÅF Lighting did a total makeover of Østbanehallen in Oslo, that later won them the Nordic Lighting Design Award 2016.
The project, commissioned by Jernhusen, is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
