ÅF proves great saving potential with LED street lighting technology.

ÅF Lighting works closely with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration to ensure the best road lighting solutions in Norway.

Since spring 2015, a large analysis and several tests of LED luminaires and lighting control systems have been conducted by ÅF Lighting and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA - Statens Vegvesen) in the county Vestfold in Norway. The analysis and tests confirmed that changing to LED-based luminaires can offer a significant energy saving potential as well as a reduction in maintenance costs.  Surprisingly the analysis showed a very large difference in the energy consumption of LED luminaires even though all luminaires could fulfill the requirements for the given roads.

- It is important to conduct a thorough analysis before starting to refurbish road lighting in any given area in order to contextualize and establish the saving potential. The analysis showed that the energy consumption from the best LED luminaire to the poorest, which still fulfills the requirements, can be up to a factor 2,8, says lighting engineer Thim Andersen.

Based on the results NPRA will now carefully choose the LED lighting and control systems for all new street lighting in Norway in order to achieve the energy reduction that LED based system can offer.

Read more about the possibilities for better and safer public road lighting by choosing the right LED luminaires in this recent Norwegian article published by Sinus Magasinet.

You can find the official handbook and guidelines for NPRA here. The handbook is written by ÅF Lighting for NPRA and is continuously updated due to the rapid development of LED lighting and control systems.
