IALD Award of Merit

ÅF Lighting was honoured at the 33rd annual IALD International Lighting Design Award for the lighting design in Østbanehallen in Oslo, Norway.

ÅF Lighting recently helped transform Oslo’s first railway station Østbanehallen into an attractive food court and city centre shopping haven. Last night, they won the International IALD Lighting Design Award at a spectacular award show in San Diego.

At the 33rd annual IALD International Lighting Design Award ÅF Lighting has been recognized as setting an example in lighting design excellence for their lighting design in Østbanehallen in Oslo, Norway. The IALD International Lighting Design Awards program is the longest running award program recognizing architectural lighting design excellence.

“It is a great honor to have been invited to San Diego to receive the IALD Award of Merit. This must be as close to an Oscar ceremony as one can get in the art of lighting design,” says a proud and happy Morten Jensen, manager of ÅF Lighting Oslo. “We have put a lot of effort into this project and I believe that we have created a high-end solution which exhibits all the special qualities of Nordic lighting design.”

ÅF Lighting’s team has designed a complete lighting solution for Østbanehallen, including functional lighting for the entire hall as well as especially designed lighting solutions to create a unique and pleasant atmosphere. When it was first built, Østbanehallen had an open east facing façade which allowed the light from the rising sun to fill the great hall. The new lighting design features a striking pixel wall which once again makes light and sunrise part of the building, symbolizing the beginning of new days and new journeys.

Kai Piippo, Head of Design in ÅF Lighting and speaking at the light fair says: “I am very proud of ÅF Lightings design team in Oslo for having created such an extraordinary project and for sharing the special qualities of New Nordic Lighting, which is the main philosophy in our lighting design work.”

This year, from 207 submissions, the judges selected thirteen entries to take home Awards of Merit.

Østbanehallen previously received the Norwegian Lighting Award for “Best indoor lighting project 2015.”
