Production doubled through project management
A Swedish pulp mill was planning to double its production capacity with a budget of SEK 4.2 billion. To succeed, storage facilities and roads needed to be adapted to the new operations.
ÅF was chosen to manage the entire logistics project, which was intended to ensure a sustainable and safe solution for storage and traffic. The project included services such as project management, mapping, analysis, development of a solution and implementation.
For dimensioning of wood inventories, we mapped the current needs and working methods and analyzed future needs. Inventory build-up was simulated and analyzed. Solutions were developed and evaluated with respect to the investment cost, maintenance cost, environmental impact and occupational health and safety. The final solution resulted in the expansion of storage facilities in close connection with production and rental of warehouse space during the spring, when the need for storage space is greatest.
As a solution for traffic in the area, future flows of vehicles and people were mapped and analyzed. A solution was created with a focus on safety-enhancing measures, including separation of pedestrian and vehicle flows and a solution to reduce speeds and keep them down. ÅF defined the requirements for the construction management and made sure that implementation was completed on schedule.
We delivered a total solution from feasibility study to commissioning. The views of all stakeholders were taken into consideration and the project was coordinated with a focus on sustainability, profitability and safety. ÅF’s project manager was one of three finalists for the “Project Manager of the Year 2015” award, which was presented by Universum for her leadership, focus on added business value and sustainability thinking.
