Under the Sea
ÅF Lighting has been appointed to design the lighting for Europe's first underwater restaurant.
ÅF Lighting’s team in Oslo will design the lighting for Norway’s underwater restaurant “Under” developed by Snøhetta, the award-winning Norwegian architecture firm. Located on the coastline by the village of Båly, half of the structure will be submerged into water, resting five meters beneath sea level.
The structure is designed to become an integral part of the environment, acting as an artificial reef. The coarse concrete structure makes it easy for mussels to cling to its surface, which will attract marine life, and help increase biodiversity while naturally rinsing the sea water. The restaurant is planned to function both as a culinary experience in spectacular surroundings and as a research center for marine life.
Together with marine biologists, ÅF Lighting will test different lighting solutions and measure the effect on local marine life. The idea is to attract various species that will be visible from the restaurant, without harming the natural environment. With a direct view of the ocean, through a huge window, visitors will gain an undersea experience out of the ordinary.
Morten Jensen, ÅF Lighting’s manager in Oslo, says “We’re honored to be part of such a skilled design team, collaborating to create this spectacular scenery” and lighting designer Stine Kaalstad adds, “working with amazing architecture in such a unique location, makes the design of the lighting an exciting, motivating and educating process. I look forward to taking part in this project, but also to experiencing the restaurant once it’s ready to open”.

Under is expected to open in the beginning of 2019.
