At the same time as the ÅF Group celebrates its 100th jubilee in Göteborg on the west coast of Sweden on 30 September, the newly formed inspection and certification company ÅF-TÜV Nord will receive its official accreditation from SWEDAC. The certificate, to be presented by SWEDAC's Director General Lars Ettarp in conjunction with the Group's centennial festivities, marks the starting point for the company's operational activities, inspecting and approving Swedish nuclear power facilities. 

 

ÅF-TÜV Nord is a 50/50 joint venture between ÅF-Kontroll and the German inspection and certification giant, TÜV Nord Gruppe. The company, which possesses very high levels of expertise, will enjoy something of a unique position in the sphere of Swedish nuclear power technology. A two-year contract with the Ringhals and Barsebäck nuclear power plants that includes all third-party inspections of a total of five reactors will be the company's first undertaking on the Swedish market. The assignment is expected to generate earnings for the company of approximately SEK 10 million a year.

 

"This means that the ÅF Group has achieved its objective of becoming fully comprehensive in the kind of inspection services it can offer its customers," says Jörgen Backersgård, Managing Director for ÅF-Kontroll. "Achieving this accreditation has meant a great deal of hard work for us, but it proves the depth of the experience and expertise that the ÅF Group has to offer. This further consolidates the ÅF Group's position as a strong, all-round supplier of services to the Swedish nuclear power industry."

 

ÅF-TÜV Nord, which is based in Göteborg, has around a dozen employees, but can call on the full scope of resources within both the ÅF Group and TÜV Nord Gruppe. In addition to inspection work, the two companies have also coordinated their quality certification and environmental certification operations.

 

TÜV Nord Gruppe has 4,500 employees. Most of its work is concentrated to Germany although it does also act in the international arena. The ÅF Group has 2,700 employees, 150 of whom work for ÅF-Kontroll.
