Against tough competition, the ÅF-Group has been appointed to carry out design engineering of electrical and telecoms installations for the ”Arlanda Nord” project at Stockholm-Arlanda International Airport. The project consists of expanding and adapting Arlanda to meet the Schengen Agreement, and a new Runway 3. The client is the Swedish Civil Aviation Administration.

The project employs some 40 consultants from the ÅF-Group and is calculated to be worth about SEK 40 million. The ÅF-Group’s assignment covers, among other things, power supply, telecoms systems, construction management and installation co-ordination. The project time is short and the project is also influenced by safety requirements with regard to electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and the safety of both passengers and property. The ÅF-Group will use 3-dimensional design software for co-ordination, etc. During the period of construction a site office will be set up at Arlanda Airport for 20 consultants.

Stockholm-Arlanda International Airport will undergo major changes in the coming years to meet increased safety requirements and growth in traffic. Expansion is necessary to manage an increase in traffic from 16 million passengers in 1998 to 19.6 million in 2002 and 22.6 million in 2005. The expansion plan features a third runway which will be completed in 2002, raising runway capacity by 30%. This will require a corresponding expansion of the terminals and piers. The project includes adapting Terminal 5, building a new sixth terminal, and a new pier (F). The Schengen Agreement will be in effect at the airport from October 2000, making domestic and Schengen traffic more alike.
