Construction, verification and CFD analysis of a new wind tunnel for electronics cooling at Ericsson Climate Design in Kista

The aim of this master thesis is to construct and verify a new and compact wind tunnel for electronics cooling testing at Ericsson Climate Design in Kista. The work consists both of practical design and construction issues together with final verification and calibration of the tunnel when assembled. Since the wind tunnel is rather compact enhanced understanding of the flow field inside is necessary for accurate measurements. For this CFD simulation is used as a predictive tool and a possibility to analyze different flow situations in detail. The CFD work will be done using the open source platform OpenFOAM (www.openfoam.org) and the data will be compared with practical flow visualizations and measurements.
 
This project is cooperatively supervised by the Climate Design Unit (CDU) at Ericsson in Kista and the Mechanical Engineering Department at ÅF. The work will be divided between CDU and ÅF in such way as to give the student insight in both the industrial and the consultancy world of electronics cooling technology and computational physics. The student will be economically compensated when the thesis is finished.
