We have been amassing experience regarding risk and safety issues since 1895, when AB Ångpanneföreningen was founded. At that time the threat was "vessels flying into the air" – causing personal injury and downtime. Since then, ÅF has progressed alongside Swedish trade and industry, taking in developments in areas such as electricity, infrastructure, industrial processes, environmental problems, product development, computers, telecoms, the Internet … We know better than most that there are risks in every business.

Product risks

Suddenly a car manufacturer discovers a fault. Thousands of vehicles have to be recalled, leading to high costs and loss of consumer confidence. Could the fault have been predicted?

Similar things happen in all industries from time to time. Sometimes safety is put at risk. Sometimes it's the environment or reliability – or simply quality expectations.


Production risks

Manufacturing equipment in Swedish industry stands idle more than half the time. Why? It may be due to incidents in the supply chain, like a machine failing in Kinna or a factory in Mexico burning down. But it may also be due to lack of planning.

Through analyses and computer simulations, we can map out any risks in materials supply and production flows. This also enables us to develop reliable production systems for electronic, mechanical and medical manufacturing.

Facility risks

Many people would rather not think about what would happen if a cable was dug up at a hospital, but we are happy to consider the worst.

The trend today is for increasingly complex facilities controlled and monitored by IT-based systems. But this complexity also increases the risk of an incident. By prioritising high process security at the initial planning stage, we keep any risks and consequences of faults within permissible limits.

Environmental risks

Over 100,000 chemicals are currently in use, and only a fraction have had a holistic risk assessment. With its inherent mobility of goods, rising globalisation further complicates the issue, which is why legislation is being tightened. Threats to health and the environmental are also alarming, which means that negative publicity stemming from incidents and accidents makes more and more of an impact.

Infrastructure risks 

A small circuit breaker catches fire in a transformer station, and Stockholm's underground system grinds to a halt for hours on end. That's how vulnerable our society remains. In the field of track-based transport, we have extensive experience of investigating breakdown risks and safety issues. We also offer project engineering for signal systems, electricity distribution and broadband networks.

Project risks

Someone is off sick. Someone else doesn't understand what they have to do, but keeps quiet. A problem proves more difficult to solve than was initially anticipated. Work stops due to lack of manpower. Not everyone gets the right information. Instructions are unclear. Division of responsibility is unclear. Weak leadership creates uncertainty.

In recent times, we have seen more and more projects fail with the loss of millions of kronor - particularly IT and technology-heavy projects. And if you consider the value of coming out on the market on time, these risks have the potential to cause serious problems.
