Master Thesis: FEM study: develop a method for simulating failure in laminated glass during large deformations.

Background

Crash worthiness is an attribute in the automotive business with high importance to customers, manufactures, suppliers and regulatory bodies. One important part of predicting large deformation events is good material data for involved parts.  In the heavy vehicle industry, the roll over tests are very demanding and often dimensioning of the structure which drives weight and cost for the manufacturer customer. The behavior of laminated glass is complex to predict and model and therefore the windshield of the vehicle is often omitted from the simulation in order to not overestimate its contribution to the structure.

Objective

The objective of this thesis is to develop a method to represent the laminated glass windshield when subjected to large shearing deformations including failure modes and how it affects the connecting structure. The method may also need to include modelling the influence of the windshield adhesive. The work will include a test in a representative environment together with Volvo Bus Corporation. The test will be used for correlation.

Method

The study will be done using Finite Element Method (FEM). Calculations will be done in LS-Dyna and pre- and postprocessing will be done in BETA CAE software (Ansa and Meta). Testing will also be conducted together with Volvo Bus Corporation.

Preferably one or two Master students with specialization in Applied Mechanics or equivalent. 

About the thesis

The thesis will be carried out at ÅF:s offices at Grafiska vägen 2 in Gothenburg. This thesis is a cooperation with one of our partners within the automotive sector. Our partner has a strong interest in the thesis, thus, there will be regular follow-up meetings on a weekly basis with representatives from Volvo Bus Corporation.
