ÅF has more than 1 500 engineers working in the international automotive industry. We have extensive experience in executing on-site as well as outsourced assignments and is running 10 automotive customer satellites. Our customers are mainly in Sweden, Brazil, UK, and China where we also have subsidiaries and offices.
Title Master Thesis Project: Converting dynamic impact events to static loads
In a vehicle almost all chassis loads are of dynamic nature. In durability analysis using FEM, dynamic loads are generally resource consuming to use. Simulations are therefore to a large extent run as linear static load cases.
The objective is to study dynamic impact events and correlate these to static loads which provide corresponding component damage. Develop a method to identify a relation between static and dynamic loads.
Apply dynamic and static loads to a generic MBD vehicle model and extract loads for each component. Create FE models of different components for analysis and apply the dynamic and static forces to evaluate stresses and stress distribution. Adjust the static loads to achieve the same damage as for the dynamic loads. Repeat this for different load cases and investigate if a method for converting dynamic loads to static loads can be formulated. The load cases are e.g. curb lateral impact, braking over bump and driving into a pothole. It is important to include different types of load cases acting in different major directions. The components of interest include but are not limited to link arms, knuckles and drive unit mounts.The work can preferably be shared between two persons, one focusing on Multi Body Dynamics and one focusing on the FE analysis. Before proper MBD loads are available, simpler loads e.g. a hand calculated impulse can be used for the FE-model as a start.
- A method for conversion of dynamic to static loads, for different components in a multi body system.

Who are you?
Preferably 2 Master students with specialization in Automotive Engineering, Applied Mechanics or Product Development. You have strong analytical capability and use logic and methods to solve problems in an efficient manner. You also have a desire to develop technical and personal skills with high levels of motivation and a positive attitude.
