The ÅF-Group helps Tanzania to administer its finances

ÅF-Swedish Management Group (ÅF-SMG) and Tanzania's Ministry of Finance have installed a new computerised system for the control and accounting of the country's finances. The aim of the system is to utilise education in order to reduce corruption and save money by avoiding overdrawing accounts. What were formerly 200 accounts have been reduced to a single government account which is controlled by the national auditor. The system is estimated to have saved the equivalent of approximately SEK 150 million for 1998.

Sida (the Swedish International Development Co-operation Agency) has hitherto invested SEK 15 million in the system.

It is now up to the Tanzanian government to make use of the system and the knowledge it provides, says Peter Murphy, ÅF- SMG. I am optimistic because the system is thoroughly developed and the information about budgets and payments is so broad that it is an effective tool in the fight against corruption.

ÅF-SMG is a subsidiary of AB Ångpanneföreningen. In international development co-operation the ÅF-Group combines its resources under the name of ÅF-International, and also carries out management projects via ÅF-SMG. The ÅF-Group has a total of 2,300 consultants throughout the world, mostly in Sweden and the rest of western Europe.
