Working together with the City of Stockholm and the Royal Swedish Yacht Club (KSSS), ÅF wants to create the largest annual event in Stockholm with a prominent environmental profile. By moving the start of the ÅF Offshore Race (formerly called the Gotland Runt Race) from the island of Sandhamn to central Stockholm, the capital gains a new, exciting, recurrent summer attraction.
“It’s extremely exciting to help one of Europe’s finest regattas progress into the next era,” says Jonas Wiström, CEO of ÅF. “Sail racing is also a climate-smart sport, which suits ÅF. Our ambition with the ÅF Offshore Race is to further boost our brand, ÅF, as an employer for the very best engineers.”
ÅF has been the title sponsor of the ÅF Offshore Race since 2011. The event is held in the middle of summer and will take place between 28 June and 4 July. The event site will extend from Nationalmuseum over to the islands of Skeppsholmen and Kastellholmen.
Up to 300 boats are expected to compete and be moored at jetties adjacent to the event site. On land, activities and festivities will be on offer for tourists, competitors, customers and employees. The finish will be by the island of Sandhamn in the archipelago.
The City of Stockholm, which is an incredibly important partner in making this major event possible in the middle of the city, sees opportunities for residents of the capital and tourists to see an attractive side of Stockholm.
“We are delighted at our cooperation with KSSS and ÅF, and our ability – through Ports of Stockholm and the Culture Administration – to offer Stockholmers and tourists the chance to participate in this exciting event in the heart of the maritime city of Stockholm,” says Sten Nordin of the Moderate Party, Mayor of the City of Stockholm.
KSSS, the yacht club running the regatta, regards the ÅF Offshore Race as a tremendous opportunity to boost sailing as a sport by attracting new spectators and reaching new target groups.
“For KSSS, moving the start of the competition into Stockholm creates unique potential to highlight sailing to a wider audience,” says Staffan Salén, chair of KSSS. “We train more than 1000 children and young people each year and are convinced that bringing the start into Stockholm will generate even more interest in our activities.”
