Sustainable electricity distribution in Zanzibar

Electricity supplies in the Zanzibar Archipelago – as in many African nations – leave much to be desired. Power failures are common and the local electricity company, ZECO, needs to improve its operations in many ways. That is why ÅF was contracted to help stake out a path to greater sustainability.

ÅF was contracted by Sida (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency) to perform a diagnostic study of the energy sector on Zanzibar. Based on this study a proposal for an energy sector support programme was developed to be able to support ZECO in its work towards a sustainable business model. The programme comprised two main parts; to develop a National Energy Policy and to initiate a financial turnaround project to sort out the economy of ZECO.
