Energy savings in paper mill

A growing focus on environmental and energy-saving measures within the pulp and paper industry is a key driver for technological development, but many energy efficiency improvements require large financial investments.

Based on the ÅF study, the investigated Swedish paper mill could take action and save a great deal of energy, and this could be done without any investments being made. The energy consumption of the vacuum system used to be 180 kWh/tonne. With an annual production of pulp of 150,000 tonnes per annum, a reduction in energy use by 20 percent thereby saves 5.4 GWh each year. If the same modifications were to be made in all the paper mills in Sweden, electricity consumption could be reduced by more than 200 GWh per annum.
