ÅF helps the Øresund Bridge to renew colours
A mobile platform is the answer to complete the task.
The Øresund Bridge is a landmark that connects Sweden and Denmark. The bridge is important to many every day commuters and for transport of goods. It creates international business and job opportunities that people before not would have thought of. 20 000 vehicles and 33 000 train passengers cross the bridge every day. The bridge was inaugurated in July 2000.
The maintenance is one way to ensure estimated life of the bridge. One of the tasks is to repaint the metal parts of it. ÅF is involved in the construction of a mobile platform that hangs from the bridge, and can move along it, that makes it possible to repaint. ÅF is also responsible for the calculations of the strength of the platform. The construction itself is a big challenge. But there are several other challenges. First, the platform hangs from the top of the bridge, on the outside, and should protect from wind, water or other weather conditions. Secondly, the traffic can’t be disturbed.
There are both a road for cars and trucks, and inside the bridge there are train rails. The trains travel in a speed of up to 200 kilometres per hour. Not to forget, it’s essential to create a sustainable and safe work environment for the painters on the platform.
The platform consists of ten segments, the segments are 3 meters wide. There is an inner panel protecting the rail and train that moves alongside with the outer platform.
To prevent that paint and other residuals to end up in the water, a large tray is placed under each platform segment to collect them.
