ÅF Offshore Race

ÅF Offshore Race

The Nordic region's biggest and most classic offshore racing event, joined forces 2011 with technical consultants ÅF and changed its name to ÅF Offshore Race.

Everything began in 2011 when ÅF became the title sponsor for the round Gotland sailing race, which then changed names to the ÅF Offshore Race. We moved the sailing race’s start to central Stockholm and the competition has grown larger every year since.

More than 2,000 competitors participated in the ÅF Offshore Race in 2012. Around 2.9 million people watched the one-hour long TV programme. Media coverage is estimated to have reached 11 million readers, which corresponds to around SEK 3.4 million in advertising. What a success!

The spectator figures have risen steadily over the years. In 2016, there was a full 180,000 unique visitors to the Race Village on the island of Skeppsholmen in central Stockholm. The competition had a total of 200,000 spectators.

The objective of the sponsorship effort is mainly to create pride internally and to build a good platform to engage ÅF’s target groups. ÅF is contributing to taking Sweden’s premier sailing race into the next era. Ocean racing is a climate-smart sport that fits ÅF’s profile perfectly.

The City of Stockholm, which is an incredibly important partner in making this major event possible in the middle of the city, sees opportunities for residents of the capital and tourists to see an attractive side of Stockholm.

KSSS, the yacht club running the regatta, regards the ÅF Offshore Race as a tremendous opportunity to boost sailing as a sport by attracting new spectators and reaching new target groups.

“For KSSS, moving the start of the competition into Stockholm creates unique potential to highlight sailing to a wider audience,” says Staffan Salén, chair of KSSS. “We train more than 1000 children and young people each year and are convinced that bringing the start into Stockholm will generate even more interest in our activities.”
