About the job

ÅF has more than 1 500 engineers working in the international automotive industry. We have extensive experience in executing on-site as well as outsourced assignments and is running 10 automotive customer satellites. Our customers are mainly in Sweden, Brazil, UK, and China where we also have subsidiaries and offices.

Title Bachelor Thesis Project: Innovative ski pole tip for roller skiing 

The difference of the surface material between cross country skiing and roller skiing causes different forces and effects on the ski pole and its tip. The tips are subject to wear and tear in a complex way, and if it breaks, this could affect the result, from being on the podium or not. The aim of the thesis is to analyze the tip forces in roller skiing, both practically and in theory, and develop a unique, innovative pole tip specifically for roller skiing, to minimize the braking and providing the best grip. The material of the tip is also key, to prevent wear.

The objectives are to develop a complete prototype pole tip.

  • The project is limited to roller skiing 
  • Some aid in calculations from ÅF is available. 
  • Needs and requirements to be developed, documented 
  • The work is localized to the student home town with regular meeting at our office in Trollhättan

In order to carry out this task, following steps will be taken: 

  • Literature study to see how other manufacturers make their pole tips 
  • Data gathering and construction. (forces on tips) 
  • Testing and validation using CAD and FEM software. 
  • Assessment and report finalization.

The outcome of the project will be a:

  • concept study that fulfills the needs and requirements
  • report describing the processes of the project
  • presentation of the project 
  • CAD model for further work on the pole tip 
  • material selection

Who are you?

Preferably 2 Bachelor students with specialization in Mechanical Engineering. You have strong analytical capability and use logic and methods to solve problems in an efficient manner. You also have a desire to develop technical and personal skills with high levels of motivation and a positive attitude.
