Title Bachelor Thesis Project: Static friction in fastening connections

In analysis and dimensioning of fastening connections it is very important to have relevant values of static friction. In a fastening connection, the combination of preload from the fastener and the friction between the mating surfaces are dimensioning the external shear load and the function of the connection.

Study friction levels at rest, static frictions, between surfaces of various materials in fastening connections with combinations of steel and aluminum.

Make study in the literature to find static friction values. Make tests by applying shear load to a static loaded connection. Find the brake away force when the connection starts to slip. Calculate the static friction from shear load and static load.Repeat this for different material combinations in the fastening connection, steel to steel, steel to aluminum and aluminum to aluminum. The tests can also be extended to describe the influence of surface pressure in the mating surfaces (differences in static load), varies surface profiles and also different surface treatments.

Static friction analysed from tests and literature studies with different material combinations.
