About the job

CFD is used extensively in the development process of cars. Design changes are evaluated according to the impact they have on different attributes, for instance, the aerodynamic drag, soiling of the vehicle or the under-hood thermal management. Sometimes, a design change is good from the perspective of one attribute, but bad for another. The design thus needs to be optimized with respect to multiple attributes in order to find an optimal solution.

The objective of this thesis is to develop a multi-objective parametric optimization method that is capable of finding an optimal design for the engine air intake system (AIS). For the flow into the air intake system, the pressure drop needs to be as low as possible, the aero-acoustic noise should be minimized and the snow and dust needs to be separated from the flow. These properties are counteracting and hence, it is hard to fulfill them at the same time.

Who are you?

Preferably one Master student with specialization in Applied Mechanics or Automotive Engineering with a strong interest in CFD and automotive flows.

We offer

The study will be done using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Parameterization will be done in Catia. The design proposals will be evaluated using CFD in Star-CCM+.

The thesis will be carried out at ÅF:s offices at Grafiska vägen 2 in Gothenburg. This thesis is a cooperation with one of our clients within the automotive sector. Our client has a strong interest in the thesis, thus, there will be regular follow-up meetings on a weekly or every second week with our client.
