Right light - right price

ÅF enables Norwegian municipalities to light the road ahead

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration decided to make an in depth analysis and evaluation of lighting technologies available on the professional road lighting market.

The reason behind the analysis is that Norway has to save energy and increase safety on their roads. At the same time the cost for road lights in Norway is more than NOK 1 billion in just electricity per year. ÅF Lighting was given the mission to make a study on how the Norwegian roads can be efficiently, environmentally and safely lit in the future. The result shows that there is a potential for huge savings in choosing the right luminaire.

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration gave ÅF the job to set up a research project consisting of a market survey, a research survey and a benchmark analysis of a large group of available LED-based luminaires offered on the Nordic market today.

Until now the LED market has been characterized by a low level of transparency due to the lack of industry standards. This project changes the picture as it benchmarks the different luminaries against each other. It is as such the first thorough analysis presenting a comprehensive overview of the current LED market.

The project has gained great interest from municipalities in the Nordic countries as it will give owners of road lighting independent new insights and ways of handling the replacement of inefficient and old lighting technologies. The study will also give new knowledge and solid facts on how LED-luminaires perform in real public road environment. The study will enable municipalities to choose the right light for the right price for their particular needs, - saving money, energy, environment and lives in the process.
