Support in development and evaluations of mobile satellite communication systems.
About the customer and project
OverHorizon is a new global satellite communication service provider, whose cost-effective solutions in a unique way combine mobility, broadband data throughput, flexible service areas, ease of use and security. OverHorizon’s operating systems includes geostationary satellites, ground support systems and small on-the-move satellite terminals with electronically steerable flat panel antennas, being part of man-pack equipment or installed on mobile vehicles such as cars, trucks, ships and aircrafts.
The services are designed to meet customer demands for secure mobile broadband communication, especially in areas with limited or no infrastructure, with users in e.g. defense, rescue, media and government organisations, and in oil, gas, mining, agriculture, forestry and fishing industries as well as in commercial business and for enterprise executives.
The selection of ÅF as a consultancy partner was made based on a dialogue between ÅF’s senior consultant Johan Tenstam and OverHorizon, where Johan’s competence profile and experience from development of mobile communication systems for aerospace and wireless business customers was found to be useful.
Since April 2013 ÅF participates in the development of a novel, compact and flexible antenna system for OverHorizon’s satellite terminals, as well as in studies, modelling & simulations, procurement support and development for satellite terminal pointing support, interference handling and link optimization. We have also been involved in the procurement of OverHorizon’s first own geostationary satellite, with participation in analysis, specifications and evaluations. Supplier contacts and marketing support has also been part of the work in different areas.
For this consultancy work, ÅF has provided resources with competences in mobile satellite communication systems, international radio standards, radio link analysis, electromagnetic fields, array antenna design, microsystems, beamforming/-steering techniques, analog & digital radio design, software defined radio architectures, adaptive signal processing, spectrum analysis, interference suppression techniques, app development for smart phones, testing & verification & validation, measurement techniques, cost-performance analysis, market analysis, project management and product development.
During the Fall 2015, ÅF supervises a thesis work with selected students from Uppsala University in collaboration with the Ångström Laboratory and OverHorizon.
