Tamanthi Dam, Hydropower & Multipurpose Project

Consultancy Services for the Feasibility Study Assessment & Follow-up Services for the Tamanthi Dam, Hydropower Multipurpose Project (1200 MW) located in Myanmar.

The project scheme is located on the Chindwin River, some 30 km south of Tamanthi Village, in the State of Sagaing in Northwestern Myanmar. It comprises an earth core rockfill dam 74 m high (from lowest foundation depth) with a 2,500 m crest length (embankment volume 17 million m3) creating a reservoir with an active storage capacity of 12,9 billion m3, a gated spillway with sixteen radial gates (w x h) 12.5 m x 14 m with a design flood discharge of 46,137 m3/s (= PMF), 6 penstocks each 9.5 m in diameter and 127 m long and an outdoor (surface) powerhouse located at the toe of the dam, housing six vertical axes Francis turbines with a maximum installed capacity of 200 MW each (1,200 MW). The design discharge and gross head is 3,062 m3/s and 46 m respectively.

Some of the salient features in the design of the dam is the combined earth core rockfill / concrete gravity dam with complex foundation conditions consisting of river alluvions up to 50 m in depth and weak sandstone as bedrock. The foundation foresees a 50 m deep cut-off wall with plastic concrete. The scope of AF-Consult Switzerland (former Colenco Power Engineering Ltd) services includes the preparation of the specifications for the preliminary tests on site (specification and testing program). The equipment and construction method statement applied for the cut-off wall tests at site followed the recommendations of the company BAUER Far East Group. In addition, the following services were performed:

ÅF services includes the review, update and completion of the feasibility study with alternatives study; site reconnaissance mission and review of hydrological data and studies; review of site geology and preparation of field investigations programs; preparation of the specifications for the site investigations and site tests for the construction of the cut-off wall. The consultancy service scope also covers assisting the Department of Hydroelectric Power and lrrigation Department in the additional site investigations required for further developing the basic designs and construction planning of the project and know-how transfer in the framework of different training and workshop programs.
