Wow for Telia

“Wow for Telia” is a lighting design project at the new headquarters of telecom company Telia in Stockholm. The client asked for a memorable design solution which would enable guests and employees to experience the culture and soul of the company in a fun and effective way.

In cooperation with interior designers, ÅF Lighting with help from Sweco Architects developed a comprehensive design concept, consisting of four different conceptual environments: Home, On the Go, In the City and In Nature, representing the areas where Telia is present in people’s lives. The experience is achieved with magical light characters and playful lighting installations. To create the unexpected and the unseen, exclusive solutions were developed across each environment, and several installations and luminaires were custom designed to fit the concept. Also, as the building has a BREEAM certificate at Excellent level, very high levels of sustainability had to be met.

As you first step into the office, you find yourself at Home. The character of the light is warm, cozy and diffused, to create an atmosphere where people can relax and get comfortable before meeting with Telia.

“The Connecting Bridge” was designed to connect the Home area with the main building. It is a busy passage featuring a daylight installation with color filters on the windows, and vertical LED strips that shine softly during the day and take over the space with dynamic settings at sunset.

Continuing onwards, you step into the On the Go area. To give the impression of movement, round platforms with sofas and chairs rotate slowly under a large light installation known as “The Switchboard”. Covering the grand atrium in its entirety, the installation is composed by light nodes on the vertical wall and light pipes of different lengths and angles. Various light scenarios have been set for the day and year, and the daily schedule is inspired by our biological need for circadian light. Light under the rotating platforms and a circular screen displaying messages from employees complete the scene.

In the City is Telia’s open piazza. Here, the light is white and welcoming. Low-hanging, diffused lamps with round shapes invite people to sit on the large wooden stairs, while custom-made catenary street-lamp style pendants hang all the way across the atrium.

In Nature brings Sweden’s natural surroundings into the office. This is a calm, quiet and fresh area of the building, with decorative fixtures and plants hanging from the ceiling at a low height. To ensure that the plants can survive in this environment, which has little daylight, several light and energy calculations were carried out. During the day, hanging cloud-like bubbles may be contemplated from the ground floor and up. Light is projected onto the bubbles from below and from above, and their light change in color and intensity.

The result is an example of great lighting design combined with smart technical solutions, making this unique office functional yet innovative, and representative of Telia’s brand.
