Factory Floor Planned Using VR Technology

When Swedish bearings manufacturer SKF wanted to evalute a new factory floor plan, they asked ÅF to create an interactive visualization.

This visualization was used to communicate the new floor plan within the project at SKF and also to other parties. It also served as an efficient tool in the decision making process, allowing for the placement of the machines to be evaluated.

The final visualization includes:

  • A complete factory floor plan in VR
  • A visualization of what it looks like with machines in place
  • Camera path animation
  • Animated and interactive robots

To create a realistic virtual copy of the factory, the ÅF team visited SKF several times to register lighting conditions and colour schemes. The visualization itself was then created through the use of gaming technology.

To create an accurate visualization, ÅF developed a pipeline to convert and optimize CAD models for real-time viewing, which is key for creating realistic virtual visualizations. The final product was a highly accurate basis for decisions in the SKF factory replan.
