Research project - solar energy for transportation systems
ÅF is cooperating with Uppsala University in a research project about possible ways of integrating photovoltaic systems into Sweden's network of roads and railways.
This project, funded by the Swedish Energy Agency, involves exploring the possibilities for providing transport systems with locally produced and renewable solar power.
During the spring of 2018, stakeholders will be invited to a workshop, where an interim report will be presented. One of the findings so far is that it is possible to integrate solar cells in noise reducing fences along motorways and railways. Large surface areas could be used to produce 100% pure solar energy to fuel lorries and trains.
Such solar systems would also serve as noise protection, improving the acoustic environment for those who live along the routes in question.
Total power: 12.7 MWp
Potential energy production per year: 12 GWh
