Modern bus depot with seven floors

When Stockholm Public Transport’s new bus depot in the Fredriksdal area of Hammarby Sjöstad in Stockholm is inaugurated, it will contain 120 layover bays for Stockholm’s inner-city buses. The new depot will include workshops, washing facilities and garages where the buses can be refuelled, washed, charged and serviced when they are not in traffic.

The assignment is a partnering project between Stockholm Public Transport (SL) and Skanska, and the depot will cover an area of around 50,000 sq. m. Ground was broken in August of 2012 and the depot is scheduled for completion in 2017. The building will have seven floors. Integrating the bus depot into the urban environment is an important aspect of the project. The bus depot is located between Hammarby Sjöstad’s main street, Hammarby Allé, and the area’s quay side. However, it will not be visible to passersby due to the construction of office and residential structures that block the depot from Hammarby Allé.

ÅF is responsible for planning and design of HVAC and sanitation systems in the bus depot, which has a total area of around 50,000 sq. m., divided between several floors containing workshops, staff areas, washing facilities and layover space for 120 buses. The buses will run exclusively on biogas. The compressed natural gas (CNG) plant, including gas storage, will be placed on the Mårtensdal block, which is opposite the new depot, on the other side of Hammarby Allé. The initiative is being carried out as a partnering project between SL and Skanska. The depot will also serve as a foundation for three office properties, of which one, belonging to SL, is included in the project.

In the project ÅF is responsible for planning and design of installations for HVAC and sanitation systems:

  • Hot and cold water, hot water circulation, pressure boosted hot water, and waste water systems
  • Storm water, incl. oil separators and storm water storage
  • Chemicals
  • Windscreen washing fluid
  • Glycol/water mixture
  • Oils (motor oil, gear box oil, rear axle oil and waste oil)
  • Compressed air
  • Coolant systems
  • Heating and heating ramp for outdoor bus layover
  • Air conditioning
  • Smoke fans

ÅF is also responsible for preparation of technical documentation for procurement of:

  • Bus washing facilities
  • A complete installation for wet vacuum cleaning
