Klippan’s old plant
ÅF has modernised Kraftringen’s old heating plant in Klippan by upgrading its control and monitoring system to the ABB 800xA.
Kraftringen’s old heating plant handles the crucial job of distributing district heating to the surrounding area. Kraftringen produces district heating mainly by burning wood chips in another facility (also upgraded by ÅF), but the old heating plant also has a gas boiler used as a backup when it gets extremely cold.
The facility was previously controlled by a legacy system that lacked support and spare parts. As a natural part of Kraftringen’s large 800xA system, ÅF played an important role as integrator and the upgrade gave Kraftringen a modern, open, operator-friendly operations monitoring system that will facilitate future upgrades and modifications.
Pumps, operation and associated circuits needed to be upgraded and integrated into the 800xA without disrupting delivery. This was done successfully through careful, detailed planning with the client.
In addition to a local operator station, a new local server environment was also installed at the old plant. A fibre connection to the main production plant, where the existing server was also modified within the scope of the project, provides both of Klippan’s plants with a redundant server solution that is ready to seamlessly manage both facilities. Remote control from the newly built Örtoftaverket plant is made possible through a thin client.
ÅF was charged with delivering a complete system at a fixed price and included these elements:
- Project planning
- Purchase of hardware, both new instrumentation and PLC/server
- Development of upgrade documentation
- Construction of new plant section, automation and electricity
- Delivery of new consoles
- Electrical and instrumentation installation by subcontractor
- Internal testing
- Development of documentation
- Trial run
Klippan’s facilities for supplying heat to the surrounding area now have a modern, open, future-proof, operator-friendly operations monitoring system that facilitates future upgrades and modifications. The project was successfully implemented, coming in on time and on budget.
