Jämtkraft

ÅF did upgrade the existing Siemens PCS7 control system for the steam turbine at Jämtkraft’s CHP plant in Lugnvik in Östersund, Sweden.

Jämtkraft’s CHP plant in Lugnvik, which in an average year accounts for up to 20% of Jämtkraft’s total production, required modernising to guarantee future electricity production. ÅF was commissioned to upgrade the existing PCS7 process control system for the steam turbine. The result was a modern, open and future-proof control system.

Challenge

The CHP plant had been in operation since 2002 and required modernising. The steam turbines and control system were supplied by Siemens and the most recent control system upgrade had been carried out in 2007. Key customer requirements included completing the upgrade within the established timeframe and ensuring the plant functioned in exactly the same way as it did prior to the upgrade.

Solution

ÅF upgraded the PCS7 control system on the steam turbines to the latest version and replaced the PS library with the latest standard and open APL library. We also replaced old Windows XP servers with new Windows Server 2008.

Our task was to deliver a complete plant at a fixed price, including the following aspects:

  • Project engineering
  • Creation of documentation
  • Design and design review
  • Purchase of hardware and PCS7 licences
  • Risk analysis and testing protocols
  • Upgrade of PCS7 from version 6.1 to 8.0
  • Replacement of the PS library with APL library
  • Installation of separate engineering station
  • Code clean-up
  • Internal testing
  • FAT
  • Commissioning
  • SAT
  • Trial run
  • Training
  • Handover

Result

Jämtkraft gained a modern, open, future-proof and operator-friendly process control system that will facilitate future upgrades and changes. There were no setbacks during the implementation of the project, which was completed within the timeframe.
