Decontamination of toxic area

When Smurfit Kappa Lagamill AB decided to close down its paper mill in Markaryd, Sweden, a risk assessment of the contaminated soil and groundwater was necessary. It is important to make sure that toxic material is not left in an area, so that the area can be used for other purposes.

Over the years that this work took place, measurements were made to ensure that River Lagan was not contaminated. Lagan is the longest river in southern Sweden and it passes through several towns. The investigations and the subsequent environmental remediation actions managed by ÅF have significantly reduced the risk that hazardous substances from the old pulp mill in Markaryd will reach River Lagan.
