Hydraulic Structures & Natural Hazards

Hydraulic Structures and Natural Hazards

We are specialised in the realisation of complex studies and proposals for flood protection, re-naturalisation of large and small rivers, desilting and cleaning of retaining schemes. Significant is the collection of basic data analysis for hydrology, hydraulics and sediment transportation by our many experts.

Many years of experience within the area of hydraulic model tests also enable us to provide innovative solutions to the customer's advantage. The analysis of natural hazards (floods, landslides, avalanches, earthquakes) and measures of protection against these hazards are an indispensable part of the safety needs of the population.

Excellent project management is guaranteed due to the well-established and inter-disciplinary methods used by our staff who are always familiar with latest state-of-the-art working techniques. Back-up is also provided by our co-operation with laboratories of universities and technical institutes.

Hydraulics and Hydrology

We provide expertise in water level computations (1 and 2 dimensional) as well as for unsteady flow conditions. Special hydraulic calculations, flood wave computations (unsteady), flow routing, hydraulic structures (inlets, weirs, spillways, de-sanders, special structures, pressure shafts, tunnels, special structures) belong to our core competence. Problems are being solved by our own engineers either in close co-operation with universities and technical institutes with hydraulic model testing facilities or by utilising our own extensive hydraulic model testing experience and capabilities.

We have long established world-wide experience in elaborating hydrological studies which are the fundamental basis for the design of hydropower plants, irrigation schemes, flood wave protection schemes and residual flow solutions. The evaluation of basic data from rainfall and flow measuring stations is carried out using current best practice. Rain fall-run-off models and flow measuring stations are not only theoretically managed, but are examined and optimised practically within the actual catchment areas. For data collection, we are able to design, provide and maintain flow stations and to calibrate them with in-house equipment.

Flood Protection

Effective and extensive flood protection projects have been successfully managed by us for decades. Besides the evaluation of feasibility studies, flood protection concepts and necessary precautions, considerable attention is also paid to environmental planning; protection of existing structures; floodwater retention basin; river diversions; local enlargement of rivers and maintenance and operation concepts.

Natural Hazards

As seen world-wide, natural hazards very often lead to damage of property and livelihoods. In some cases they are even life threatening. For future investments it is therefore of utmost importance for natural hazard processes to be thoroughly studied in advance and on a continuous basis. We have the specific know-how in the fields of flood impacts, waves, avalanches, landslides, rock falls and earthquakes. We provide hazard maps, master plans and emergency planning expertise. Upon clients’ demands, we are able to summarise specific questions in an “Experts Report”.
