ÅF wins the Danish Lighting Prize

Wednesday, November 23, 2011

On the 16th of November ÅF Lighting won the Danish Lighting Prize with the comprehensive lighting project at Aalborg Waterfront

The former industrial harbor area in Aalborg has since 2004 been undergoing large changes to create a recreational urban space. The lighting project connects the center of Aalborg to the adjacent fjord with the help of a mix of functional and scenographic lighting. As a result, the old industrial area has become a bustling waterfront boulevard, where aesthetic and interactive lighting solutions are complemented by generous functional lighting to create a diversity of expressions.

The jury said...

The jury's arguments for choosing this particular project focused on the fact that the lighting has created visual coherence in the large area while maintaining the specific qualities and atmospheres in the small garden spaces and squares.
The jury also enhanced how the project is a rare combination of good functional lighting and poetic light settings, which has turned the area into a both pleasant and safe place to visit.

Furthermore the jury appreciated how the choice of lighting equipment in daytime underscores the maritime qualities and the architectural design on the harbor front. The good visual comfort and the free view to the water and Nørresundby on the other side of the water was also mentioned in the judgment.

The Danish Lighting Award is founded by The Danish Lighting Center (Dansk Center for Lys) and was handed out for the first time in 2008. The election of the winning project is based on criteria such as technical quality, functionality, visual and aesthetic aspects as well as life cycle costs and energy consumption.

The project in Aalborg is done in collaboration with COWI, landscape architect Vibeke Rønnow and C. F. Møller.
