Specialist services within Nuclear Technology strengthens ÅF’s competitiveness
The new market area Nuclear Technology makes ÅF in Sweden even more competitive as ÅF also offers specialist services within the nuclear industry. Nuclear engineers and engineers with specialist competence are in general a scarcity and many of them are soon retiring. The drive from ÅF is a natural step in the investment in increased nuclear power expertise to the entire company. Together with the internal educational body the ÅF Nuclear Academy and the ÅF Nuclear Trainee Programme this area of expertise takes a natural part in ÅF’s competence bank.

The driving enthusiast who leads ÅF Nuclear Technology is Lars Dahlström who has long experience in nuclear industry, both in Sweden and abroad. At the 1970’s, Dahlström participated in the construction of the Swedish nuclear power plants. According to Lars, ÅF meets the constantly increasing demands from both authorities and the nuclear industry itself by staking on experts in nuclear areas. He proudly announces that the individual is at the same time offered a personal development in his or her work, one doesn’t exclude the other. ‘Being able to offer our customers specialist services shows great professionalism and strengthen our position on the market as we become a stronger partner’, he claims.

 ÅF Nuclear Technology combines excellence and extensive research with broad spectra of technical knowledge across the nuclear field. Lars Dahlström claims that ÅF has specialists with great experience within process design, power uprate, maintenance strategies, emissions, radiation and fuel management to name a few. |

Per Persson is one of the group’s pillars. With a PhD in Nuclear Physics; he has done research missions for the Swedish Nuclear Fuel Management Company and expertise in hazardous waste. Per has been responsible for radiation protection in a fire project in Chernobyl where they built a new facade over the area, a huge arch that covers the reactor and offices. Per thinks it's exciting to be involved from the beginning when creating a new market area, "the goal is to build a depth in many areas in order to make the Nuclear Technology an expert bank for the entire nuclear industry '. Furthermore, he says that ÅF’s interest is to be involved in the large projects at an earlier stage caring the overall issues.

Sara Almgren is a younger talent who came directly to ÅF and Nuclear Technology after taking her PhD in Radiation Physics. Her expertise is in radiation physics and radiological safety assessments; she has carried out research in ionizing radiation in the environment, particularly with different types of measurements, and she has also worked with emergency preparedness. 'For me ÅF was the natural choice as it provides opportunities to work in different places in different kinds of projects, while one can get a chance to work on projects abroad,' says Sara. ÅF and Nuclear Technology's focus on individual development is important for Sara who thinks it is fundamental to continuously develop in one’s work.

ÅF Nuclear Technology is a complete new market area and the group of experts will be expanded significantly in the nearest future. Examples of recently recruited cutting-edge expertise are in polymer materials, cables, plasma physics and ITER research. The nuclear field is a broad area in which diverse skills are included. "Together with the rest of the ÅF Group we are doing everything for our customers in order to develop and make the best contribution to energy security with a focus on caring for the environment - today and in the future", concludes Lars Dahlström.
