Arabic-Swedish handbook supports newly arrived HVAC engineers
It is now possible to download the handbook “HVAC for Arabic speaking – a handbook for newly arrived engineers” for free. The author of the book is the HVAC engineer Zain Nadra. Zain moved to Sweden from Syria a few years ago and experienced the Swedish language as a challenge in the beginning of her employment at ÅF.
When the mechanical engineer Zain Nadra moved to Sweden from Syria a few years ago, she wanted to start working as an engineer again. In 2016, Zain joined ÅFs New Immigrated Engineers Project and got a job placement as a HVAC engineer at ÅFs office in Solna. But the new, more advanced systems and technical terms in Swedish made it difficult to enter the profession in Sweden. Therefore, Zain started to compile a wordlist of Arabic translations of Swedish technical terms along with descriptions of the most common ventilation systems in Sweden.
- It is not easy to enter work life as a newly arrived engineer in Sweden. There are for example new technical terms, more advanced systems and different building regulations compared to Syria. I really hope the book will help Arabic speaking HVAC engineers to get an easier start in their profession and that it will make them feel more comfortable in their new work place, Zain says.
The handbook is targeted at HVAC engineers, but Zain thinks it could be helpful for Arabic speaking engineers in the entire construction sector. The handbook has been available to download since July 2018 and Zain already got a lot of positive feedback.
- A lot of people has contacted me and praised the handbook. They have told me that it helped them in their work and studies.
