Smart Grid System

The smart grid project that the city of Malmö is running together with E.ON has resulted in a digital solution that is instrumental in developing a more sustainable society. The platform that ÅF helped develop has created great value for property owners who heat their buildings using district heating, encouraging the use of district heating over other less sustainable alternatives.

In cooperation with the city of Malmö, the energy company E.ON has launched a large-scale project to deliver modern energy solutions in the district of Hyllie in Malmö. The project focuses on evaluating and developing new technologies to gain insight into how they can be leveraged to achieve more sustainable energy use, both at the customer level and the systems level. To this end, development began on a new smart grid system for providing optimisation and power management functions on the demand side (demand-side management).

The system establishes an information link between energy production and the energy consumer resulting in mutual benefits. The system can be used to control energy use, which in turn reduces production costs and environmental impact. Short-term bottlenecks can also be circumvented to reach more grid customers. The system is based on IoT and cloud computing with networked control points on the power grids and is being used to control district heating, district cooling and electricity.

E.ON sees great potential in the use of IT and digitalisation to create new value through data collection, data analysis and energy conservation. By being better able to drive the development of new systems, E.ON sees opportunities for developing tomorrow’s energy systems that can then be customised to suit customer needs and circumstances.

ÅF is contributing its expertise to the entire system development phase mainly concerning IoT architecture, software development and embedded systems. Making the desired functions possible requires an understanding of areas such as automatic control, algorithm development, automation and data analysis. Responsiveness to the client’s business objectives are key to further developing the system together successfully.
