An electric railway is potentially the cleanest of all means of transport, and we are experts in electric power for railways. Our consultants design the overhead line to power the trains as well as the supply to all the other equipment associated with the railway (lighting, signalling etc).
Environmental impact
Controlling stray currents and electromagnetic fields is an important part of further reducing the environmental impact of an electric railway. Return current from the train goes via the running rails, and the resulting stray currents in cables and pipelines are minimised by means of booster transformers that lead the current back to the overhead system. Other systems reduce electromagnetic fields.
A reliable supply
Distribution of energy to the signalling system, point heaters, lighting and buildings is via a supplementary 11 or 22kv line on the overhead system. Low voltage is supplied by transformers placed as near as possible to the end user.
Faults must be quickly and reliably isolated by means of relays and fuses. Our designers place and dimension these so that as few as possible loads are isolated in a fault situation.
We also work with systems for remote control of electric supply. These together with alternative supply routes enable us to minimise power outages. We design UPS where shorter outages would cause an unacceptable loss of function.
